COVER THE WORLD
ZUTE
By Jason Oppenberg (guest writer)

Mike "Zute" Pizzuta (M"Z"P) is usually on the "journalist" end of this column, but for this week, we switched it up, and his band ZUTE are now the subject.
I recently caught ZUTE at Rhythm & Brews in Pequannock, NJ. I was immediately impressed how well M"Z"P (bass/lead vocals) and Adam J Pliss (drums /samples) played together. I have always thought that a tight rhythm section makes a band, and these guy's proved so, especially on "CHOP SUEY". Add in the guitar talents of Michael Friedman, and you've got one solid unit. ZUTE put on a refreshing show,
playing some great cover songs, while occasionally throwing in an original.
Michael's guitar work was stellar on song's like "Rockin in the free world", "Hemorrhage" and "Right now". M"Z"P showed off thunderous bass lines (as well as strong vocals) in songs like "Sex type thing" and "My own worst enemy".Adam used midi drum sounds to pull off an incredible cover of "One step closer". On"Play that funky music", he covered three parts (drums, horns, cowbell") utilizing his sampler. It was hard to believe only three guy's were playing this very full sound. The hightlight of the show was when the trio broke into "Crazy train". It was complete with "train" sounds courtesy of Adam, and topped with Michael's blistering solo.
The covers provided a great setting for the originals that Zute mixed into the set. Two that really stood out were "Sunblock 2 Million", and "Me, you & your friend", which was played earlier this year on 'WDHA 105.5 FM! I can best describe the original sound as Primus meets Alice in Chains with a little bit of Lincoln Park thrown in.
ZUTE are a must see.It was a great audio-visual experience (did I mention they played with a full Laser light show in the background?). Check them out at www.ZuteWorld.com

July 26th, 2003 - ZUTE - R & B's, Pequannock, NJ by Tony

It was Saturday, I was local, I was with the Hodge...so off to the local watering hole I ventured to catch some local talent. The band was Zute a three piece power trio in the vein of Rush playing mostly today's hits with some originals mixed in (oh yea, they even broke out Play that funky music). The band consists of Mike "Zute" Pizzuta on bass & vocals. This guy can hold his own on vocals as well as bass. His playing was solid while he held down the bottom, & threw in a nice bass solo or two throughout the night. Mike Friedman on guitar, this dude can play...! His good sense of rhythm and amazing guitar solos made him the one to watch. It is rare to hear a good guitarist with a sound to match. Most guitarist tend to have that whole mid to high frequency in a tin can sound that always seems to haunt you when you go to bed with your ears ringing of that high note. On drums was Adam J Pliss who was not only a solid player but mixed in some drum effects which gave this small room one hell of a big sound. Adam got to show off some fancy footwork a couple of times during the night. This along with some good harmonies puts him on the list of musicians to see. The band also has a fourth member which controls a pretty cool laser show behind the kit. The laser has a good flow with the music and I did catch myself a couple of times in the zone.
If your into the whole raw sounding tight three piece thing, go see Zute!
